First thing we recommend is to take a look at the below maps and get your bearings of where Raíces del Viento is located in Chile. You can see our map, as also the tourist map of the commune (in a hyperlink). You can click that to see them with zoom. We are approximately 4 1/2 hrs by car from Puerto Montt or 5.5 hrs by bus.
If you’re coming from Santiago to Puerto Montt
You can buy a bus ticket online or at the bus offices around the city. The easiest way is by doing it online or by just going to the Bus Station directly though you may find them expensier if you do it on the same day.
The cheapest and reliable bus companies has been ETM, Thaebus or Pullman tough there’re plenty companies that reach Puerto Varas/Puerto Montt and some other ones could offer good prices. The best thing will always be ask and find the cheapest.
Buy a ticket to Puerto Varas if you have an idea where to find the bus to Rio Puelo otherwise buy a ticket to Puerto Montt if you’re not sure of this. By doing so you will be dropped at the bus terminal where you can find the bus to Rio Puelo among the offices there.
Coming from any other region or city just follow the same procedure by going to the bus terminal.
If you’re coming from Puerto Montt or Puerto Varas
Option 1: By car
Going out from Puerto Montt you must take the Route 5 towards Puerto Varas, taking the route V-69 part of the net Inter Lagos that goes from Puerto Varas passing through Ensenada-Cochamó-Río Puelo, this last part (Río Puelo) is part of the “northern carretera Austral”. Once in Río Puelo (not the town but the district) you must take the detour towards Lago Tagua Tagua. This road will take you to Punta Canelo, the lake and the ferry. From here you must take the ferry and cross the lake to continue the road towards Llanada Grande (52km). This is the main town of the area, from here on any food, drink or tool will be difficult to get so consider that before go trough the town.
Carry on about 12 km after Llanada Grande and turn right on the road towards Puerto Urrutia [5, 5.1] (3km) or “El Balseo” this point is the furthest you can reach with a vehicle and the closest to RDV (4km). Park there and cross the river, there are free services crossing the river most of the days (check schedules below). You can also pay the boatman to be dropped near RDV (400mts).
Exit Puerto Montt by Pelluco. Here you will take the beginning of the “carretera Austral”, this route will take you through beautiful landscapes that goes along the Reloncavi fiord taking you to Caleta Puelche . Here you must take a ferry, once you hop off you must take a detour (very bad signposted) towards the north, you should find this detour because it’s right in front of the customs office. From the detour you’ll drive for about 40min until Río Puelo and once passed the town you’ll find the detour towards Lago Tagua Tagua. This road will take you to Punta Canelo , the lake and the ferry. From here you must take the ferry and cross the lake to continue the road towards Llanada Grande (52km). This is the main town of the area, from here on any food, drink or tool will be difficult to get so consider that before go through the town.

If you’re coming from those areas, you must reach Caleta Puelche and follow the indications given above. (Option 2)
Option 2: By bus
At the bus terminal in Puerto Montt you must look for buses going to “Lago Tagua-Tagua” the departing time is at 7:45 am every day. The name of the bus company it’s called “Buses Río Puelo” . This same bus can be taken in Puerto Varas at 8:15am at the bus stop in San Pedro st with Esquina el Salvador.
This bus will arrive in Lago tagua-tagua at 12:30pm place in which you will connect with the ferry Caupolicán , departing at 13:00pm making the lake crossing in about 45min dropping you on the other side and connecting with the local bus . Take this bus and ask the driver to drop you at Puerto Urrutia, from here you will be connected with a boatman that will cross you free of charge to the other side of the river [5.1]. THERE’S ONLY ONE BUS GOING FROM TAGUA-TAGUA TO PUERTO URRUTIA. IF YOU MISS THE MORNING BUS (PUERTO MONTT/VARAS) THE ONLY WAY TO REACH US IS BY PRIVATE CAR/HITCHHIKING.
Option 3: Hitchhiking
From Puerto Varas walk towards the road V-69, from here you will catch hundreds of cars heading to Ensenada-Petrohué-Cochamó-Río Puelo and Llanada Grande.
